Identifiable Victim Effect

In a study 2 groups of students were shown pictures of a girl or a boy suffering from starvation

  • One group saw only one child, while the other group saw both children
  • The group that saw only one child had a higher average willing to donate

We’re more likely to feel empathy and an urge to help a specific, identifiable individual, compared to a larger, vaguer group of people
